This ulcer is the result of a
freezing of a squamous-cell carcinoma of the leg on a Medicare patient.
At one time (October 1996) Medicare guidelines failed to endorse the
use of MOHS surgery on this patient who chose liquid nitrogen spray
as oppose to scraping and burning to treat this tumor. Unfortunately
proper freezing or scraping and burning to treat a squamous-cell cancer
of the leg results in an ulcer that usually takes several months to
heal without biologic dressings and may become infected.
