Photo of a young man with numerous
burn scars that resulted from "scraping & burning surgery"
(= C&D) treatments performed by a then-popular South Florida doctor.
Note their unsightly white color and small areas of redness at the
edges of the some of the spots. These red areas indicate the zones
where skin cancer is likely returning. Up to half of these areas were
scraped and burned by the doctor. The treatment failed to remove the
original tumors. These had to be redone with MOHS surgery after this
picture had been taken. The patient was very upset that he had not
warned by the then-popular doctor that a high failure rate could result
from this method of scraping and burning treatment on his body. It
is a medical fact that up to 10-20% of C&D treatments fail to
cure basal-cell carcinoma. However, the large proportion of BCC in
this patient that failed scraping and burning treatments may call
into question the doctor's level of competence.
