Thin tissue specimen from a stage of MOHS surgery that is being cut in the cryostat machine.

Diagram showing how the vertical section "breadloaf" method of testing for skin cancers such as basal cell and squamous cell has a possible failure rate. Only a small fraction of the edge or margin or "crust" is tested no matter how special the method of doing the vertical section. Only several specimens are tested during the process. This can miss a root of cancer as shown. Missing a root can result in the regrowth of cancer.
MOHS surgery slides are examined under the microscope after the tissue has been stained with special dyes and cut in the cryostat.
