Chapter 6
Moles, Melanoma
and Pigmented Spots
Aim of
the melanoma section: After reviewing this chapter the reader should be
more familiar with malignant melanoma and skin growths such as the dysplastic
nevus or atypical mole that may be related to melanoma. The various forms
of melanoma, one of the most lethal and treatable skin cancers, will be
discussed, including superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma,
lentigo maligna, and others. Methods to detect malignant melanoma including
naked eye detection, skin biopsy methods and dermatopathology will also
be discussed in-depth. Suggestions and new findings regarding sunscreens
and their relationships to melanoma are made.
