Aim
of the precancer section: After reviewing this chapter
the reader should be more familiar with the precancer
called actinic keratosis and how it relates to squamous
cell carcinoma. The different forms of actinic keratosis,
a human's most observable common skin cancer, will be
discussed. Treatments for the precancer called actinic
keratosis including fluorouracil (Effudex, 5-FU), liquid
nitrogen, photodynamic therapy, Retin-A, and laser surgery
are clearly explained. Methods to diagnose actinic keratoses
and precancers including naked eye detection and skin
biopsy methods are approached in-depth. Suggestions and
new findings regarding sunscreens and their relationships
to precancer are made.
